Plastic films have evolved into one of China’s major plastic products, characterized by high production volumes and a wide variety of types. They are extensively used in packaging, architectural decoration, electronics and electrical appliances, as well as everyday consumer goods, with the packaging industry being the most prominent application area. In addition to traditional materials such as PE and PVC, BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene), BOPET (biaxially oriented polyester), and BOPA (biaxially oriented nylon) are new‑generation film materials that have experienced rapid growth in recent years.
Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film is typically a multilayer co-extruded film. It is produced by co-extruding polypropylene pellets into a sheet, which is then biaxially stretched in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. Due to molecular orientation during stretching, this film exhibits excellent physical stability, mechanical strength, tensile strength, and impact resistance, along with good gas barrier properties, high transparency and gloss, and superior toughness and abrasion resistance. Being colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non‑toxic, it is one of the most widely used printing films today. Of course, BOPP film also has certain limitations; its main drawback is poor heat sealability, and it tends to shrink during heat sealing. Consequently, it is generally employed as the outer layer in composite films. For example, when laminated with polyethylene film, its moisture barrier, strength, and stiffness are significantly improved, making it well suited for packaging dry foods.
In recent years, as thin-film technology has continued to mature, numerous new varieties have been developed—such as pearlescent films, matte films, and transfer films—thereby broadening the range of applications for biaxially oriented polypropylene films.
BOPP film is primarily used for ice cream bags, food bags, and garment bags.
